The Inter-Institutional Graduate Program awards a Master’s degree (MSc) in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine. The diploma is awarded by the Department of Biology of the University of Crete.

The Program is run by the Special Inter-Institutional Committee (Ε.Δ.Επ.) and the Coordination Committee (CC) according to the law [ν. 4485/2017 (ΦΕΚ 114/Α΄/04-08-2017)] and its formal description [5021/26.04.2018, ΦΕΚ Β’ 1798_21.5.2018].

Students' selection process takes place usually in May at Heraklion Crete, according to the "Program Regulations" [ΦΕΚ Β’ 2204_13.6.2018].

Details concerning the Program are provided in the "Program Regulations".

In short, the timeline of four academic semesters is as follows

The four academic semesters include courses lab training and research for a minimum of 21 months.

Start of the academic year: Last week in September.

1st Semester:  Last week in September till mid-February. It includes courses and exams, as well as seminars of the participating members of the program.

Course and seminar participation of the students is mandatory. Non-justified absence from lectures results in nullification at the corresponding portion of the course.

2nd Semester:  mid-February to mid-September. Three rotations of 8 weeks each (first is for 9 weeks, 2nd for 8 weeks and 3rd for 10 weeks also accommodating for Easter and summer vacations). The first rotation is assigned by the Coordination Committee (CC). The second and third rotations are assigned by the CC from 3 student's choices. Within two weeks following the end of each rotation, students submit a written report that is graded by the supervisor of the receiving lab.

September 15:  First year’s evaluation. An average grade of at least 7/10 is required for both courses and for rotations. If the grade-average is lower than 7/10, students can take again the following year the course with low score. Rotations are not repeated. The studies of students that fail the 7/10 average grade are terminated.

3rd and 4th Semester:  At mid-September, successful students choose Scientific Supervisor (SS), among members of the Program, and start their Masters Studies Research (DMS). Two additional examiners of the Master's Thesis are also chosen (they do not have to be members of the Program).

Final Examinations include: a) a written Master’s thesis report (minimum of 15.000 words without including references), in English or in Greek b) public presentation of the work and c) examination by the Master’s three member committee.

Passing grade for the Master’s thesis report and Examination is at least 7/10. The Master’s thesis report must be submitted to the Program’s Secretary.

The final grade is the average of grades in courses, rotations and Master’s thesis report (in a 25:25:50 proportions correspondingly).

Date of MSc Degree Award: A Master of Science Diploma is awarded to the students who completed all of the above requirements, on July of the 4th semester (or later, within a maximum of 6 academic semesters).

The MBB program provides to the students 120 ECTS points 30/semester, according to the European Credit Transfer System.

The Graduate Programme in Molecular Biology and Biomedicine (MBB) has been established and runs jointly by the Departments of Biology and Medicine, University of Crete and The Institute of Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (IMBB) of the Foundation for Research and Technology Hellas (FORTH). The collaborating partners have international reputation in cutting edge research in molecular biology and biomedicine and participate actively in educational training and research activities of the Programme.

The quality and the large number of research groups of the three collaborating institutions (Dept. of Biology, Dept of Medicine and IMBB) offers excellent training and comprehensive coverage of modern molecular biology, while engages the students in scientific research aiming to better understand molecular functions and to develop potential medical and technological applications.

The scope of this Programme is to provide high quality training to young scientists in molecular biology and biomedicine, with emphasis on new developments and up to date technologies and to prepare them for pursuing careers in both the academic and industrial research and technology as well as in education.
